A practical guide to the main factors that affect UK colocation pricing and how to scope a realistic quote.
The main cost drivers
UK colocation pricing is usually based on rack space, power allocation, bandwidth, IP addressing, support requirements, connectivity and contract terms. A single 1U server is a very different requirement from a high-power full rack or a dedicated private cage.
Rack space
The first pricing decision is the physical footprint: 1U, 2U, 3U, 4U, quarter rack, half rack, full rack or private cage. Smaller footprints suit individual servers and appliances; larger footprints suit production platforms, storage and network stacks.
Power and bandwidth
Power is often the most important variable because it affects capacity planning, cooling and resilience. Bandwidth requirements should be scoped around normal monthly transfer, peak traffic and whether 95th percentile billing is a better fit.
How to get an accurate quote
Provide rack size, hardware model, estimated power draw, bandwidth requirement, IP needs, access requirements, remote hands expectations and any cloud or carrier connectivity requirements.
